Cricketers donate Rs.2.5 mn to tsunami victims

Bangalore, March 28: The Indian Cricket Players Association (ICPA) is donating Rs.2.5 million to the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the tsunami victims.

"We hope to give at least Rs.2.5 million to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund," said ICPA vice president and former Test player Arun Lal.
He said the cheque, in aid of the victims of the Dec 26 tsunami that killed at least 10,000 people in India and 280,000 worldwide, would be presented to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh "soon" in New Delhi.

"We will give it as soon as possible, probably around the Delhi one-day international (against Pakistan) on April 17," said the former opener, who played 16 Tests and 13 one-day internationals (ODIs) in the 1980s.
He said all 17 players contracted with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) as well as some others had contributed to the cause.

"The senior players (those in Grade I of the contract) are donating Rs.150,000 each, Grade II players are paying Rs.100,000 each and each of the Grade III players are paying up to Rs.50,000," Lal told IANS.

ICPA president Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi would also be contributing to the amount, he added. It works out to Rs.1.8 million. Then Ravi Shastri (an ICPA office bearer) is donating Rs.100,000-plus and I am giving Rs.50,000," said the former Delhi Ranji Trophy player.
The ICPA is also raising money through charity events.

One such event was organised in the ballroom of the Taj West End hotel here Sunday night where the entire Indian team was present.

"The companies that supported us (Sunday night) were Air Tel, the South African Breweries, HSBC, ABN Amro and there were three-four other companies."
