One of the largest earthquakes recorded in history, the Black Sunday Earthquake which occurred on the 26th of December 2004 measuring up to 9.0 on the Richter Scale rocked the earth’s tectonic plates permanently, triggering killer waves called 'Tsunami' and damaging several coastlines across 11 countries. The toll is yet to be determined. The latest information recorded over 1,50,000 dead with many reported missing.

This rare megathrust earthquake took place at 00:58:53 UTC (07:58:53 local time) in the Indian Ocean, off the western coast of Northern Sumatra, Indonesia. At a magnitude of 9.0, it was the largest since the 9.2-magnitude Good Friday Earthquake off Alaska in 1964, and it tied for fourth largest since 1900. Numerous aftershocks were reported off the Andaman Islands, the Nicobar Islands, and the region of the original epicenter in the hours and days that followed.
