Delhi Police rescues 62 child labourers
Child labor is a persistent problem in the sphere of India and has been going on from time immemorial. It is true that, from time to time, a number of high-level talks and conferences have taken place but with no prolific result. These conferences have often gone gaga in regard to this prevailing crisis but have only comprised the affluent citizens, journalists, human rights activists and bureaucrats while the juvenile scavengers do watch from outside. What is more, according to the Directive Principles of State Policy in the Indian Constitution, it is a criminal offence to engage any minor in any hazardous job. But even after 60 years of independence this chronicle is going strongly and also gaining strength with the passing of years.
In this regard, the local police aided by a voluntary organization liberated 62 child labourers from an embroidery factory. The entire incident was continuing in the broad daylight and even in the national capital. Well, police must be credited for its swift action but above it the key role was played by one voluntary organization named Bachpan Bachao Andolan. They were the key persons to notify that in the factory, already abovementioned, children mostly under the age of 14 were engaged in a hazardous job of dingy embroidery units.
Speaking on this R Verma, Deputy Commissioner of the capital's North East district said, "We organized this raid as per the information of an NGO. We have rescued 62 children in which 55 are below 14 years of age and 6-7 is above 14. All have been brought from Bihar, especially from Motihari district. Some of them are as small as 8-9 years."
These rescued children would also be given release certificates under the Bonded Labour Act that entitles them a rehabilitation package of 20,000 rupees. The police has already started its investigation, with a lot of vigor, in order to identify the owners of the family.
