India needs lots of apposite measures to fight back AIDS

It is true that the saga of AIDS in the length and breadth of India has assumed an alarming proportion but, thanks to the general awareness among the political leadership of this deadly disease, a stronger will is perceived to fight back this lethal ailment. This, on the other hand, raises hopes to subdue its expansion especially in a country, which has the third-largest caseload in the global spectrum.

All these came out as a result of the publication of report titled "Redefining AIDS in Asia - Crafting an Effective Response" by the Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh. To the consideration of the U.N. agency UNAIDS, mainly responsible behind these necessary studies, the developed consciousness among the political brass of the country was assisting the spread of general awareness among people. They were also found in the forefront of buttonholing for HIV-related legislation and pushing for more resources to struggle against the deadly virus.

According to the Reuters, the agency’s head was congenial enough to shower praises on politicians since they were taking lots of responsibilities to access the remotest corners in the country. Speaking on this Denis Broun stated, "India has managed to slow down the epidemic in some states with more decisive planning. We have really worked a lot in mobilizing politicians and they have been able to visit around the country and understand the realities of AIDS and interact with people." To him, these over-the-top approaches were already quite prolific in the southern states like Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra in the west and people were also getting conscious than ever before. This has resulted into a great reduction of cases, till now.

It is to be noted, that India contains almost half of the HIV infected population in Asia, while in Asia there are almost reported cases of five million people. The general figure of death is around 440,000 people annually, and if proper measures are not adopted this figure has the competence to rise up to 500,000 by 2020, if not more.

Though to a survey, released last year, by a new U.N.-backed estimate, the number of HIV-positive caseloads were half of the previously gauged 5.7 million, a greater part of India, especially the rural India, is still ignorant of this. Among these areas there is not even the basic knowledge of the necessity of condoms and AIDS! What is more the drug users and women in rural India happen to be most vulnerable.

The need of the hour is therefore more governmental encouragement, effective sex education and strategic planning.
